The HGM Office bulletin boards are full of great information for students looking to get involved on and off campus. In addition to the huge variety of clubs on campus, there are ongoing programs in the community and summer opportunities galore. Our newest club, the Harry Potter Club, meets weekly and already has an active membership. The American Cancer Society chapter here at NoHo is planning a bowling event and everyone will be invited to participate. Details will be coming soon! Ultimate Frisbee, VAMS, Math, Chess, Foreign Films, Indian, Magnitude are just a few! There isn't a lunchtime available for many HGM students who are active on campus. If students haven't found a place to get involved yet - please just come by the office for more information!

When I stopped by rooms 171 and 172 this afternoon they were filled with sleepy students who have spent night after night at school, along with coach Mr. Maine, preparing for Science Olympiad and Oceans Bowl. Both events take place this Saturday and both teams hope to defend their regional titles. The dedication was clear in all of their faces. "We left at about 11 last night" said Jennie Zheng, fresh off of her third place finish as a B team member in last week's Science Bowl competition and now looking forward to SciOly on Saturday. The passion for science is palpable and the camaraderie is heartwarming. We look forward to supporting them this weekend. Good luck to all!

Our HOUSE meetings today reflected the different personalities of their members. Besides the usual doughnuts, each house participated in some type of activity and many started making plans for additional events. I feel an event war coming on as one HOUSE plans a night trip to the Mt. Wilson Observatory. Hmmm...that's a hard one to compete with. I'm still trying to organize bowling! I'm sure we'll all come up with something interesting soon.

Finally, the day ended with our alum Randy Clemens stopping by to share his news on his first cookbook and his plans in the culinary world. We wish him luck in his new endeavors!

As we approach our WASC accreditation visit we find ourselves exceptionally busy in preparation. Our HGM parents will be sending representatives to meet with the committee on Sunday and the classroom observations will begin on Monday. We also congratulate our students who participated in DUKE Moot Court at Duke University last weekend. The teams and individuals did exceptionally well beating all other schools.
In addition, we received the news that three of our eleventh graders have been selected as regional winners of the Toshiba ExploraVision Award and hope to make it to the national competition.

    Congratulations to all!

It was a heart-stopping series of events yesterday as we observed round after round of impossible science questions. In the end, the questions were not too impossible for our Science Bowl teams as they placed FIRST and THIRD in the LADWP Regional Science Bowl. In a double elimination round against formidable opponent Granada Hills, our A Team pulled out an amazing win. Captain Shaun along with teammates Kyle, Slater, Isaac and Harry will be heading to Washington D.C. to represent the region in the National Science Bowl. Rain, Jennie, Khatcher, Danny and Irene make up the B team and they, too were terrific yesterday. I don't know how everyone keeps their cool match after match. Dr. Delling, Dr. Choe and many parents and students were also there to cheer them on. This marks the 12th time our team has won the regional title in the last 13 years.
With all the wonderful talent representing the LAUSD, it's really sad that not one individual in leadership, like say the superintendent or the local superintendent or anyone outside the schools for that matter... can make it to this major competition.
